Summary of A Wicked Tale Of Cinderella’s Stepmom
There is a famous fairytale. A kindhearted girl whose father and stepmother got married and became a family of five with her two stepsisters.
The poor girl who was condemned by her stepmother and stepsisters when her father died. The very fairytale, Cinderella. But I am not Cinderella, I am the stepmother. At the age of thirty-seven, already married twice, been widowed twice and is raising three daughters!
Daniel Walford, a man who keeps approaching me while I’m busy trying to raise my three daughters.
“Can I kiss you?”
As a son-in law, I think he’s a little bit older but why does he keep approaching?… Oh, I don’t know.
Once I let Cinderella marry the prince, I can live quietly.
But is this fairytale really ‘Cinderella’?
The isekai story features a twist with the protagonist being the evil step-mother, Mildred Barnes. Of course, she believes the protagonist is the young step-daughter Ashley. You probably already know the story of Cinderella, so no need to recap it.
In the story we see Mildred struggle finding good matches to her daughters (all three of them). She still believes the fairy godmother will come and help Ashley, but so far nothing has happened.
In fact, the prince seems to fall for one of her other children instead (but only we know he’s the prince). Ashley is also really not talented in anything. In fact, she makes more mistakes than she manages to do good deeds.
Now, the story focuses on the children, but mostly on Mildred and how she navigates society.
If you don’t like older women potentially having a younger male interest, this story may not be for you. It’s greatly hinted that one of the younger men in the story is looking favourably on Mildred.
He dances with her when potential bad runors might destroy Mildred’s reputation. He even confessed to himself that it was partly the reason, but also that he just wanted to dance with Mildred.
The art is quite decent, but one unique aspect is the eyelashes which have the same color as the characters’ eyes. So Mildred’s eyes are green and thus her upper eyelash is also green. At first, this threw me off but I’ve come to like it. It makes the comic instantly recognizable.
As for the story, it’s not anything super impressive but I do enjoy it. Mildred is a strong character who is attempting to do right by her children. Even if it means rubbing the wrong way with royalty.
The way Mildred might focus too much on one of the children may come back in a bad way in the future, but everyone is becoming more mature and dealing with things more appropriately. So maybe the backlash wont happen. Now, I read some spoilers and it seems the story is more complex than we may initially have been led to believe!
Very rarely do we see strong female leads that are older than mid-20s, especially with children. I think that’s why I enjoy the story so much and I’m lowkey shipping Mildred with Daniel Walford. They’re just adorable together!
Recommendation: If you enjoy mature isekai protagonists, definitely read.
