Skip Beat! has been the manga I’ve read for the longest amount of time, ever. I really wish we can see a conclusion to it within our lifetime.

Skip Beat! Summary from MU
Kyouko Mogami lived solely for her childhood friend Shoutaro “Shou” Fuwa. She follows Shou to Tokyo so that he may realize his dream of becoming a famous singer.
When his dream is realized, Kyouko overhears the truth behind his decision to bringing her with him: he was using her as a maid.
Shocked and enraged, Kyouko swears to take revenge by outdoing him in show business.
With a new look and a new attitude, she joins LME, the agency where Ren Tsuruga (Shou’s rival and the #1 actor of LME) works, in the hopes of achieving her goal of destroying Shou’s pride.
Along the way, she discovers her true self, makes new friends (and enemies), and finds herself at the heart of some interesting situations that will change her life, and the lives of all others involved, forever.
I am unsure where to begin to even write about “Skip Beat!” since it’s such an involved manga series. The story is being published in traditional Japanese media, as in a magazine with collection of chapters released as chapters is being pushed out.
The biggest issue with this series is the long time it takes to finish it! We’re still waiting 19 years for the bleeping story to come to its finale. Yet, we only get one chapter per month, so no wonder it takes forever.
We’re finally receiving some confessions from the characters, but unfortunately I don’t think the story is going to finish anytime soon, regardless. This is the slowest burns of all slow-burn romances.
Ok, so it sounds like I’m hating on the series and I’m not really hating it. I’m just upset since I want the love to finally take root so we can ship our main characters!
If you start reading the story from scratch, you’re going to be enjoying more than if you wait for the story to be done. The chapters are usually a decent length, but sometimes it feels like filler chapters more than anything.
Kyoko and Ren are quite a different couple, but I do like that Ren is waiting for Kyoko to be “of age” before he dates her. He’s respectful in that regard, at least. He’s not a sleazy guy but seems to really care for Kyoko, even though she’s mostly horrified of him.
In early chapters, we were having some interactions between them that didn’t seem “innocent”. However, it’s not like anything compares to other series which have gone a lot further.
Kyoko is also pretty dense, sadly enough. So Ren is really needing to man up and become more bold when it comes to his affection. Even then she’s easily blowing it off as a “joke”.
Overall I do like the series a lot but when you’ve gone 20 years without a real kiss between the main characters it’s a bit too long! I get that Corn kissed Kyoko, but she doesn’t know that was Ren so doesn’t count!
One thing I don’t really like is the art. The body proportions are all wrong and it makes Ren look like a giant. I guess he technically is, but you know, TOO big. Sometimes it’s fine, so I’m not sure what’s going on.
Unfortunately the manga isn’t coloured either, so that’s a bummer. Maybe a blessing in disguise, otherwise we’d be waiting TWO MONTHS FOR A NEW CHAPTER.
Recommendation: Despite the long burn I do recommend reading this manga because it IS an iconic one.
