The Lady and Her Butler is a slightly more mature take on romance, dating and office work. Not to say it’s bad, in fact it’s pretty good!

The Lady And Her Butler Summary
The last thing Sooha wants in her life is a man. She’s sick of her mother calling about boyfriend problems, of friends trying to set her up on dates, of girls waiting for their Prince Charming.
But when a broke and homeless man offers to keep house in exchange for temporary housing, Sooha finds herself saying yes to a man for the first time in her life. After all, who wouldn’t want to come home to warm homemade dinners, clean sheets, and freshly ironed clothes?Lezhin.com
I really like this story, which is quite mature in its nature. Our female lead, Sooha, is a firm and level-headed woman. She’s used to taking care of herself and never asking for help.
After Seeing bad relationships in her past, she’s also determined to stay single! In a turn of events, a man, Taesoo, comes into her life.
Everything slowly starts to change. It starts off with misunderstandings, then a bit of jealousness, then a confession. Which is then revealing the truth of another misunderstanding.
In normal shoujo manga series, the story would end there with them living happily ever after. This is not a shoujo manga, however. Instead we’re taking a look inside a relationship that has a great foundation to succeed or to fail upon.
It all boils down to their shortcomings, or feelings of being inferior. Their lack of communication, inability to be vulnerable in front of each other. It’s easier to tell a lie than to to face an uncomfortable truth, after all.
As time goes on, the two begin to tell the stories from their past. We’ve been told via the narrative how Sooha’s dad committed suicide and how her mother dated many men. But it’s not until later she comes clean about it and how it affects her.
It’s a sad and tragic story that could have ended much differently had they not met.
Of course we have a villain in this story as well, but not towards the couple itself. Instead it’s more a villain towards Taeso. We’re told about his past and how this person ruined his life. I won’t spoil too much, but it’s going to get interesting.
We also have a 2nd couple to contest with. Mr Hwang and Ms Doh. I’m not going to lie when I say I have mixed feelings when it comes to Soojung Doh.
I hate her, but at the same time I’m sort-of sympathetic to some of her plights. I can fully understand how hopeless she must have felt in her life.
Things could have ended differently for her, too. Had she come clean from the beginning, the lies wouldn’t have ganged up on her.
So although I very much dislike her, I can’t help but to feel a smidge of sympathy and understanding for her.
At the end, when Taesoo forgives her and tells her to forget about it, she’s probably the most apologetic she’s been in the webtoon. Combined, I mean.
If she was ready to go to those lengths, I imagine she must have some remorse.
Please know there’s imagery of suicide, abuse and so on in this story, which can definitely be triggering for some people. Overall I’d say this is a great story which manages to bring up multiple good points about life.
The Lady And Her Butler doesn’t sugar-coat the truth about relationships. It’s tough to make things work, especially when you have different types of personalities.
However, it can either go badly or amazing. It can either tear you apart or bring you together, making the pieces you lack not matter anymore.
Some say the story is rushed and maybe, but I can still understand how someone reacts the way the pair did. We’re not robots. We don’t make the right decisions all the time. We f*ck up sometimes, both with ourselves and others.
Many are saying Taesoo’s personality changed, but did it really? As Sooha says, she doesn’t really know him that well and neither do we, the reader.
When he arrives at the apartment, it seems he’s just out of a toxic relationship and is ready to start fresh. As the years go on, it starts eating away at him.
Especially when someone he hates are claiming they’re him and taking credit for his work. It must be such a smack to the face and punch to the gut. He’s not happy accepting monetary compensation and keeping quiet, but he does it for the sake of his brother.
He’s selling out his pride for the sake of his family. For the illusion that he’s successful.
That has to suck.
Recommendation: YES! If you have any experience about relationships you can probably identify with so many things! It’s a story but the core of it is very much based in reality.
