Summary of In The Bleak Midwinter
With a dead sister and 25 years to go on her soulmate timer, Anya decides to cryogenically sleep away her problems.
Too bad she wakes up to an apocalypse full of them. Now stuck in a burnt out landscape full of killers, Anya must decide which she wants to keep: her heart or her head.– Webtoon
Where do I begin with this story, it’s so good, yet mysterious. We unravel what actually happened to Anya and the world during those 25 years she was asleep.
We’re not so far off in the future that we can’t recognize our own planet, but it’s taken a huge toll. It is almost unrecognizable but it’s not quite there, yet.
The surface and the need to wear gas masks really remind me of the Metro 203x series. I wonder if the author took some inspiration from the book and game series.
As with most wars, we hear opposing words coming from the android and the humans. Not to mention, some humans are trying to kill humans. Then we have some other crazy looking monsters ready to rip the flesh from us. Wraiths I think they’re called, quite a suitable name. It’s a kill or be killed world.
What I found interesting in the beginning was Anya and the fact she seemingly couldn’t die. Well, she couldn’t stay dead. This is very important for a revelation we get in the last chapter of the season. I don’t want to spoil it, but I feel really bad for Anya. I can’t even imagine how she must feel knowing that.
Omega is also an interesting character. Right now I can’t really say if I see the love sparks between him and Anya. I suppose it’s a bit too early to tell and they haven’t had a lot of actual interaction with each other.
Except you know, him shooting her on the first meeting. That’s what good boyfriends do, right? At least he sort of tried to prevent her from falling down once.
I think the plot is setting up for Anya to potentially pass away and actually stay dead. There’s some type of material, Dramaxil, that seems to cause severe damage to both Anya and androids. Scary stuff. If enough gets onto Anya, maybe she can actually die from it?
It seems her wounds aren’t healing from it. Or maybe she needs to die first and then the wounds heal, but that sounds a bit unlikely.
The art is pretty darn good as well, although Omega’s head looks a bit flat. Maybe that’s on purpose, what do I know. He’s hot anyway. As long as you don’t get shot on the first date, then he loses some points.
Recommendation: If you like SCI-FI, apocalyptic stories and some romance – can’t go wrong here.
